Meet your final Defender

Meet your final Defender

Why I’m excited about Iron Fist and you should be too

So Iron Fist is coming to Netflix this week. Bizarrely, I’m excited. Why bizarrely? Because until last year, I had never even heard of Iron Fist…

OK, so yeah, I am approaching this entire post and experiencing this part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a real noob. And it’s not just Iron Fist; I have never read any of The Defenders comics, never watched the cartoons and I never even saw the 2003 Daredevil movie (It’s OK, I heard, I won’t bother).

And then along came the Marvel Netflix offerings and suddenly I was hooked. And because of the quality of the series that have aired to date, I am now really eager to dive in to the world of Iron Fist in a few days’ time.

So here’s an overview of the shows that have been released so far and a quick look ahead at what’s to come.

Jessica Jones

What's it all about?

A somewhat anti-social, former superhero decides to reboot her life by becoming a private investigator.

Who's in it?

Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, Carrie-Anne Moss, Rachael Taylor

Why you should watch it?

The main appeal for me is the fact it’s so non-superhero in its approach and style. And it’s pretty damn funny too. Jessica Jones is not one for small talk, fashion or making friends; she just doesn’t give a damn about much in life.

And yet, despite essentially being a bitch, she does have a strong sense of justice. It’s the balancing of all these factors that makes for great entertainment. Add to this a hell of a performance from a genuinely creepy David Tennant and the show instantly pulled me in. So far one season has aired with a second season expected next year.

Daredevil

What's it all about?

Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer by day. By night, with his other senses super-humanly enhanced, he is a vigilante protecting the Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood of New York.

Who's in it?

Charlie Cox, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Vincent D’Onofrio

Why you should watch it?

Daredevil is, arguably, my favourite of the series that have aired so far. The lead characters are all brilliantly portrayed, there are some spectacular fight-scenes and the writing really does crack me up. There’s a great rapport between the main trio and it’s the strength of their relationship that really drives the show for me.

There are a couple of awesome bad guys in this series and fans of the comics won’t have too much trouble guessing who they are I’m sure. And we get to meet a fascinating character called Elektra who many viewers will be familiar with too. She also kicks ass. So far two seasons have aired with a third season expected next year.

Luke Cage

What's it all about?

Given super strength and durability by a sabotaged experiment, a wrongly accused man escapes from prison and takes it upon himself to stand up to crime in Harlem.

Who's in it?

Mike Colter, Simone Missick, Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard

Why should you watch it?

Now this is a really stylish, classy show. The best soundtrack of all series to date, the show pretty much features a real-life musician/artist in every episode. This show has the best one-liners and a fantastic villain portrayed by the brilliant Mahershala Ali who has the best laugh in the business. Rosario Dawson (whose character incidentally shows up in all of these shows) is particularly good in Luke Cage.

Oh yeah, it’s all based around a superhero too. Almost forgot that fact. Perhaps that’s what makes the show so good; it doesn’t need to overly dwell on the fact that its lead character is a bullet-proof punching machine. So far only one season has aired.

Iron Fist

What's it all about?

A young man is bestowed with incredible martial arts skills and a mystical force known as the Iron Fist.

Who's in it?

Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Jessica Stroup and David Wenham.

Why you should watch it?

If it is only half as good as Jessica Jones, Daredevil or Luke Cage then this show will still be well worth watching. And judging by the trailer, it looks like it has the potential to be fantastic.

The fourth and final Defender returns to New York to reclaim his father’s company and take justice in to his own hands (sounds familiar?). He’s been gone 15 years, and whilst most people thought he was dead, he was in fact learning martial arts. Now he’s back and ready to show the criminal underworld what he’s learnt. I’m sold on the premise alone.

The Defenders

What's it about?

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist team up to fight crime in New York. Awesomeness.

Who's in it?

All of the main actors previously listed, plus Sigourney Weaver, Rosario Dawson and Elodie Yung.

Why you should watch it?

Teaming up is such fun isn’t it? And superheroes love to team up, with obvious examples such as The Avengers and The Justice League.  I just hope (and I’m certain they will) do a better job than DC did with their attempt at teaming up their TV shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. I’ll be back in a few months to give a more detailed preview of this show nearer the time, but for now you can check out the very discreet teaser trailer below.

Oh and that’s not all. Another Marvel Netflix series on the horizon is The Punisher.  The producers of The Defenders series themselves have said they would love to see The Punisher (played by the brilliant Jon Bernthal) appear in The Defenders series, however they’ve also frustratingly said it might not happen. Many fans would welcome an appearance I’m sure; guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

One last point about all these shows: they all have absolutely brilliant opening credits. The theme song for each, the artwork and opening credits for each…all absolutely superb; every episode, every series, I feel somewhat hypnotically fascinated by the opening credits… every time. Marvel/Netflix are really setting a high standard here.

There’s a lot of good television out there these days, but these series are right up there so I recommend you check them out. There’s only 13 episodes for each of the seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage so it won’t take you long to binge-watch these episodes and catch up. And as the chief-editor of this website will no doubt agree, that’s bingeing is often the best way to watch TV these days.

Iron Fist drops on Netflix this week (17 March) and The Defenders is expected to air sometime in September later this year.

Get amongst it.
