Game of Thrones | S8:E1 Winterfell
After what has felt like an eternity (since Night Gathers was updated...) our much loved Game of Thrones has finally returned to our screens for one final season. Season 8, episode 1 finally brought the majority of our characters to one location - Winterfell.
Coming into this episode I’ve strongly had my emotions in check all day, I knew it was going to be good, but how good I wasn’t too sure. Most of my rationale for that comes from recently re-watching all seven season over a couple of weeks. It really reminded me of (A) how much of a masterpiece Game of Thrones is, and (B) that sometimes it takes a few episodes to connect all the pieces together - which is often best experienced consuming a couple of episodes at once. With that in mind, I’m fully intending to watch the entire season again when all six episodes have been released.
Enough with my endless babble, here’s what I loved, what I didn’t and some early predictions which are highly likely to be wrong!
What I loved
From the moment the refreshed intro graphics rolled I felt a shiver down my spin, especially with the half the wall missing and starting from more of a Night King perspective looking South - incredible.
Bran telling everyone “we don’t have time for this” when Daenerys receives her frosty welcome from the Starks - It’s true, we don’t.
Sansa telling Jon that Arya is “lurking around” somewhere. Classic Sansa / Arya banter.
The Tyrion / Sansa reunion where they both shared smirk when talking about the last time they saw each other and referencing Joffrey’s wedding which “had it’s moments”. Dank.
Yara headbutting Theon for leaving her to be captured. But also, how swol was Theon looking. The boy has been getting those gains while at sea. I also have a soft spot for the Greyjoys whenever their orchestral theme is played.
Bran waiting for an old friend. Savage. Though given Bran is a full creeper these days I don’t imagine him holding much resentment for Jaime. The same might not be said for Daenerys, Sansa, Jon (or should I say Aegon) and Arya.
Arya commissioning a new weapon which looks like it could be a spear - Maybe half valyrian steel, half dragon glass. Can’t wait to see that in action. Well that’s if Gendry can interpret her government level business requirements.
And finally, Sam telling Jon he’s actually Aegon. Amazing scene, and Bran was completely right, he was the best person to break that news. It wouldn’t of made any sense coming from creepy old Bran.
What I didn’t
I really wanted Arya and The Hound to hug it out - Apart from Tormond and Brienne of Tarth finally getting together I couldn’t think of a better on-screen combo that deserved a little more love.
For the 90% of the episode the CGI was incredible, though there were a few moments when Jon was riding a dragon that felt a little green screen / Harry Potter in a flying car. I can believe we live in a world with Dragons, but have shoddy green screens and it really takes me out of the scene.
Where is Ghost! It’s time to bring the wolf and dragons together!
Daenerys will be revealed to be the true villain of Game of Thrones
Samwell will give the Tarly family sword to Jorah Mormont
Bronn won’t kill Tyrion or Jaime - Remember that Tyrion will double any offer made against his life. But I like the idea of Bronn joining the wider crew at Winterfell.
Overall for me, I couldn’t have asked for a better episode, I loved it from start to finish. The only thing that could have possibly made it better was HBO dropping all 6 episodes at once!
